Jhapa . In a political earthquake that has redrawn the map of eastern India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a landslide victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the 15-year-old reign of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The saffron party crossed the majority mark comfortably, clinching 206 seats in the 294-member house, according to the Election Commission of India. This victory marks the first time the BJP will form a government in the state, a long-standing ambition of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party.

A giant falls

The most stunning blow of the election was the defeat of incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In a high-stakes battle in her traditional stronghold of Bhawanipur, Banerjee lost to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by 15,105 votes.

The TMC’s downfall was further compounded by a massive cabinet washout. Out of 35 sitting ministers, 22 failed to defend their seats. High-profile casualties included Education Minister Bratya Basu, Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, and Women and Child Development Minister Shashi Panja.

The question of leadership

While the BJP celebrates its historic mandate, all eyes have now turned toward the party’s central leadership in New Delhi to see who will be named the state’s next Chief Minister.

During the campaign, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had frequently hinted that a “son of the soil” would lead the state. Suvendu Adhikari, the giant-killer of the day, is widely considered the frontrunner. However, other names in the mix include Dilip Ghosh, credited with building the party’s grassroots organization, and state BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya.

Speculation is also rife that the party might appoint a woman leader to fulfill its campaign promises regarding women’s safety, with Agnimitra Paul and Roopa Ganguly being mentioned as potential candidates.

The TMC’s resilience

Despite the overarching defeat, some TMC veterans managed to hold their ground. Firhad Hakim retained the Kolkata Port seat, while Sovandeb Chattopadhyay and Javed Khan also secured victories, offering the party a small but experienced presence in the opposition benches.

Accepting the verdict, Mamata Banerjee termed the result a “conspiracy” but acknowledged the people’s mandate. “The will of the people is supreme,” TMC leader Mahua Moitra posted on X, reflecting a somber mood within the party headquarters.

As the BJP prepares for a historic swearing-in ceremony, the transition marks a significant shift in Indian politics, consolidating the party’s influence over the eastern corridor ahead of the 2029 general elections.
