40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha emerges as the hero; title favorites Spain forced to share points; Lamine Yamal sets a new record.
Spain, widely considered a title favorite for the 2026 World Cup, suffered an unexpected result in their opening match. In the Group ‘H’ fixture held at the Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday, Spain was held to a goalless (0–0) draw by the tournament debutants, the African side Cape Verde. Cape Verde’s 40-year-old veteran goalkeeper, Vozinha, became the hero as he forced the powerful Spanish side to share the points.
Throughout the match, Spain maintained complete control of the ball and launched a series of attacks on the opponent’s goal. However, they remained helpless against Cape Verde’s resolute defense and an extraordinary performance by goalkeeper Vozinha. Stepping onto the pitch at 40 years and 12 days old, Vozinha thwarted one brilliant strike after another from the Spanish side. As soon as the final whistle blew, the debutant team celebrated their historic point right on the pitch. With this draw, Spain now faces pressure early in the tournament and must prepare to face Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in their upcoming group stage matches.
Two Records for Yamal and Vozinha
While the match may not have been pleasant for Spain, it was historic for the team’s young star, Lamine Yamal. By taking the field at 18 years and 337 days old, Yamal set a new record as the youngest European player to compete in two major international tournaments (Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup). Previously, this record was held by England’s Jude Bellingham (19 years and 145 days).
On the other hand, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, who was named the player of the match for his outstanding saves, has become the ninth-oldest player to ever appear in World Cup history.
